Course Curriculum

  • Lesson 1: January 9 (Saturday, 10:00am - 11:30am EST) - Bags

    Learn how to measure, cut, and sew fabric in order to create a basic pattern to construct a bag

  • Lesson 2: January 16 (Saturday, 10:00am - 11:30am EST) - Scrunchies / Headbands

    Learn how to measure, cut, and sew fabric in order to create a basic pattern to construct an elastic scrunchie or headband.

  • Lesson 3: January 23 (Saturday, 10:00am - 11:30am EST) - Autumn / Winter project

    Learn how to measure, cut, and sew fabric in order to create basic patterns to construct an infinity scarf, a knit headband, and then a beanie hat.

  • Lesson 4: January 30 (Saturday, 10:00am - 11:30am EST) - Eye Mask

    Learn to make satin, silk, or linen-lined eye masks

  • Lesson 5: Feburary 6 (Saturday, 10:00am - 11:30am EST) - Scrap Materials Challenge

    Create a small project using only scraps acquired from past projects and class lessons.

Materials and Preparations

  • A list of needed materials:

    You may choose any other supplier or product you prefer.

    • 1 yard of a 4-way stretch fabric (i.e. velour, lycra, jersey) 
    • 1 yard of a good sturdy fabric (i.e. cotton, canvas, linen, homespun fabric
    • 2 yards of a lightweight fabric (i.e. chambray, cotton, jersey, linen)
    • spool of thread (try to match your fabric) 
    • half yard of a medium-weight fabric (i.e. cotton, linen, felt is OK)
    • spool of thread (try to match your fabric)

Meet your Instructor

Mahdiyyah Muhammad

Mahdiyyah Muhammad  |  Designer

Mahdiyyah is an accomplished self-taught sewing expert from East Orange, NJ. She started designing at the age of 8 making doll clothes out of tights and stockings. By the age of 11 she  was reinventing hand-me-down clothing, thrifted finds via her mother’s closet. Recently, she launched her first collection and led several successful and engaging sewing and fashion design programs for youth and adults in NY, including at the Harlem Children’s Zone NY, West Side Community Center and more. 

Mahdiyyah  combines her love for fashion, art, education and research by collaborating with leading designers such as Shirt King Phade of Walker Wear, Sylvester Adelabu Clarke from Barbados, and T’Yanna Wallace, notoriouss clothing boutique owner, as well as a collaboration with art institutions like Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum
